Open Enrollment for 2027 runs from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027 in states that use Healthcare.gov. If you want coverage to start January 1, enroll by December 15 (more details in our dates guide). Here's the information you'll be asked for.

1. Details for everyone in your household

  • Full name and date of birth for everyone you include on your tax return.
  • Social Security number for each person applying for coverage who has one.
  • Your home address, and a mailing address if it's different.
  • How you file taxes: your filing status and who your dependents are.

You only need to give the Social Security number and immigration status of people who are applying for coverage. If someone in your household doesn't need coverage, you don't have to provide that information about them.

2. Immigration documents, if they apply

If someone applying for coverage isn't a citizen, have the type and number of their immigration document ready, such as a permanent resident card (Green Card), a work permit (EAD), or Form I-94. The Marketplace checks this information electronically through USCIS's SAVE system to confirm whether the person has a status that allows them to enroll.

The rules on which immigration statuses can get help paying premiums changed in 2025 and 2026. If you're not sure about your situation, review it first with a licensed advisor; for any question about your immigration status, consult an attorney.

3. Income information

  • Recent pay stubs.
  • W-2 or 1099 forms.
  • Your most recent tax return.
  • If you're self-employed, an estimate of your net profit (what you earn minus business expenses).
  • Other income: unemployment, Social Security, pensions, or rental income.

The most important piece is a realistic estimate of what your household expects to earn in 2027. The Premium Tax Credit is calculated from that estimate and reconciled on your tax return. If you earn more than you estimated, you'll have to pay back the difference, and since 2026 there is no longer a cap on how much you repay.

4. Coverage offered through a job

If you or someone in your household can get insurance through work, even if they don't use it, you'll be asked about that offer: what an employee pays for the lowest-cost plan and whether it covers family members. Your employer can fill out the Healthcare.gov Employer Coverage Tool.

5. Your current coverage

If you already have insurance, have the insurer's name and the policy number for each covered person ready.

What changed for 2027

  • The enhanced subsidies ended. If your household earns more than 400% of the federal poverty level, you no longer qualify for the Premium Tax Credit, and below that level the help is smaller than it was from 2021 to 2025.
  • Income verification is stricter. If your information doesn't match IRS records, you'll be asked for documents and given a deadline to send them. That's why it helps to have them ready from the start.
  • Automatic re-enrollment still applies for 2027, but prices and help change. Review your plan even if you're re-enrolled.

If you're missing a document

You can still submit your application. If the Marketplace needs to confirm something, it will let you know and give you a deadline to send what's missing. What matters most is not missing the enrollment deadline.
